FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

The success rate of dental implants is typically around 95%. The rate can vary depending on factors such as your overall health, your oral hygiene habits, or if you smoke. Smoking can negatively impact your ability to heal. In general, dental implants have a high success rate and are considered a safe and effective way to replace missing teeth.

To ensure your dental implant heals properly, in the days after your surgery you should avoid:

Eating hard, sticky, and crunchy foods
Using a straw
Hot and cold foods/drinks
Rinsing aggressively
Smoking
Strenuous exercise
The titanium dental implant will heal in approximately four months. This is when we can begin taking impressions of your mouth for a custom dental crown. In the meantime, you may be given a temporary crown.

The lifespan of a dental crown and implant is dependent upon good dental oral hygiene (brushing and flossing) and good oral care (including regular visits to the dentist). Even though a cavity cannot develop here because there is no natural tooth present, the gums and bone that support the implant and crown must be kept healthy to minimize the risk of the implant being lost due to gum inflammation or bone loss. Detrimental oral habits such as tooth grinding, clenching or chewing on sticky foods, hard foods or ice can break or loosen an implant crown or place undue stress on the implant. A dental ‘nightguard’ is an appliance that can be worn at night to minimize any stresses caused by clenching or grinding.
